Ah at last spring is finally here. The birds are chirping, people are smiling and Russians are finally ready to bring out the Paskha. Yes it is time for easter.
Now i know not everyone celebrates this holiday but I personally do. It is important to me as it commemorates the day of the death of Jesus Christ. And though I am not very religious and will not bore you to death on Christianity or catholic rites or whatever I am going to explain about Russian easter. Okay so where to begin
Easter in Russia is WAAAAY different from the one in America and Canada. For one easter in Russia is a religious holiday there are no easter bunnies no chickens none of that stuff which people use in the Americas.
first of before easter they have maslenitsa which is period of fattening then there i lent which is fasting (no meat, dairy, eggs, etc). traditional foods are varenyky (what many call by the polish name pirogies) filled with potato and sauerkraut. tea without milk or sugar is common and toast with jam, basic food without the forbidden foods mentioned above. then when easter comes there is a celebration. I love Russian easter. the day begins with people saying хритсос воскресе Christ has risen the reply is воистину воскресе he truly is. there are tons of coloured eggs called pysanky which is found in Ukraine and other parts of Europe. Heck it is the Ukrainians who invented it! there are also dishes such as easter bread PASKHA which is delicious or cyrnik which is like a cheese dish i am still reasurching on that but haven't found much yet as everything i have found says different from crepes to cheese cake.
Many people attend church on paskha the Russian word for easter as well as there are family dinners and games. I think Russian easter is a holiday that everyone should try at least once, even if you are atheist .
if you have anymore to add please comment below until next time ХРИСТОС ВОСКРЕСЕ ВОИСТИНУ ВОСКРЕСЕ .
